Double blow: Robin van Persie (right) and Kieran Gibbs (left) both picked up injuries in the friendly defeat against Benfica
Wilshere limped out of Arsenal's Emirates Cup meeting with New York Red Bulls after just seven minutes last weekend, prompting his manager to insist that the teenager would be unable to take part in the international friendly if he failed to make the trip to Lisbon.
Wilshere's ankle knock proved too serious for him to make the 19-strong party and is almost certainly to force him out of facing Newcastle in Arsenal's opening game of the season.
