Head up son: John Terry consoles Jack Wilshere (left) after England's draw with Switzerland
He looks a good player and, if Capello prefers him in a more central position, could perhaps play beside
Rooney and behind Carroll in a Christmas tree formation next season — Wilshere, Parker and Gerrard would be the three behind.
Yet, would Young be certain of his place for Spain, Germany, Holland, France or Italy? Probably not.
So our regard for him as England’s saviour is perhaps misplaced, certainly when set against the calibre of the teams we must beat to win the tournament.
And that is the heart of the matter. To believe that Capello alone is the problem, one must first accept that his previous achievements have been an illusion, a fluke, that taking over an England team who failed to qualify for their previous major tournament is the first true test of his abilities, and he is being found out.
Alternatively, there are some things that even Capello and £6m cannot fix.
He insures your top-of-the-range Ford Mondeo, which is a very nice car. After an accident, however, even the man from the Pru would agree he cannot replace it with a Ferrari.
