Deadly Darren bent on being Fabio's next No 9 as he prepares to face Switzerland
Hot shot: Bent's goal helped England to a Euro 2012 qualifying win over Wales

‘Harry’s a well-liked guy and a lot of people listen to what he’s got to say,’ said Bent. ‘When I first left Spurs, it was on my mind to show people but after the first season when I scored a lot of goals at  Sunderland I just put it to bed. Whatever he said, it’s over now.’

Bent smiled when reminded  that Redknapp was favourite to succeed Capello as England boss. ‘If Harry gets the job, good luck to him,’ he said. ‘If I keep playing well and he doesn’t pick me, then  obviously something’s going on. But I’m sure he’ll do a good job.’

With 162 goals in 315 starts for five clubs, Bent is one of the most prolific English strikers of his  generation, a point he is finally getting across. Wayne Rooney is suspended on Saturday but in Wales in March, Capello opted for Bent at centre forward and moved Rooney to wide left.

Bent has been concerned by comments from Stewart Downing and Ashley Young suggesting they may be leaving Aston Villa. ‘I went to Villa to play with these type of players. Hopefully the club can hold on to them,’ he said.
