Before last summer's World Cup, Capello had the look of a desperate man. There was the emergency call-up for Jamie Carragher; the attempt, in vain, to talk Paul Scholes out of international retirement.

'It will be difficult for me to select 21 players for the next game because I think 26 plus two were really good over the last 10 days,' he said. 'At this moment the future looks good, yes.'
