Fabio Capello warns Andy Carroll over alcohol use as England boss to unleash £35m man

Andy Carrol has been ordered to stop drinking so much in a private chat with manager Fabio Capello, who views the striker as the future of his England team.

Carroll will make only his second senior international appearance in Tuesday's friendly against Ghana at Wembley. But Capello sees the £35million Liverpool forward as a key member of his squad and has responded to some of the 22-year-old’s off-field problems by telling him ‘to drink less’.

'He's young,' said the England boss. But his behaviour now is really important. He needs to be careful at every moment. When you play with England, you are the focus of the fans, the newspapers, the photographers, the people that live around you.

‘I spoke with him. Privately. I think not only Andy likes to drink beer. But he needs to improve, to drink less.’

Jack Wilshere has also had one or two off-duty scrapes but Capello said he would leave Arsene Wenger to deal with the 19-year-old.

‘Wenger will be a good teacher for him,’ said Capello. ‘It’s better for him to speak with him.’

On Tuesday evening, Capello will make seven changes to the team which beat Wales on Saturday, and his captain will be Gareth Barry.

The Italian will stick with a 4-3-3 formation and confirmed that Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines will start in defence with Wilshere or Scott Parker in a new midfield three.

Meanwhile, Capello was last night trying to call up striker Danny Welbeck, in an apparent bid to prevent Tuesday's opponents stealing him.
