Villa becomes Spain's leading scorer as deadly double sinks courageous Czechs
Posted Saturday, March 26, 2011 by Dailymail

David Villa became Spain's leading all-time international goalscorer as his country came from behind to maintain their 100 per cent record in European Championship Qualifying Group I.

Spain were stunned when Jaroslav Plasil gave the visitors a 29th-minute lead in Granada but Villa's 66th-minute equaliser moved him ahead of Raul, with whom he had started the night level on 44 international goals.

And Villa was not finished as he added his second from the penalty spot six minutes later to increase Spain's run of competitive victories to 10 since their opening World Cup finals loss to Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Thiago Motta scored a 73rd-minute winner in Ljubljana as Italy continued to make short work of qualifying from Group C with a 1-0 win over Slovenia.

Motta fired home after neat play involving Federico Balzaretti to give his side an almost unassailable six-point lead in the group.

Italy were on top throughout and Alberto Aquilani almost opened the scoring when he hit the post in the early stages. Slovenia's best chance was a long-range Robert Koren strike which was well saved by Gianluigi Buffon.

World Cup runners-up Holland maintained their 100 per cent record in Group E with a crushing 4-0 win over Hungary in Budapest.
