As Spain continued their celebrations after winning Euro 2012 a disappointed Italian squad left the Olympic Stadium in Kiev to begin their journey home.
The 4-0 defeat was the biggest losing margin in a final of a European Championship, Spain proving too good for the Azzurri on the night.
However, the Italians can be proud of their effort in reaching the final, beating England and Germany along the way.
Coach Cesare Prandelli has overseen the rebirth of the national squad after Italy were dumped out of the group stages of the 2010 World Cup after a disastrous tournament.
