Intro:

England coach Roy Hodgson admitted on Monday that his dreams had been shattered following his side's exit from Euro 2012.

England lost their quarter-final against Italy 4-2 in a penalty shootout - after the game finished goalless after 120 minutes.

SOUNDBITE: (English), Roy Hodgson:

"It's always sad to lose a match on penalties. You do know it's going to be a lottery and I suppose we were half thinking with all the bad luck in the past that this was going to be our lucky day. It's very difficult today to be particularly positive because we are still so disappointed in not going through to the semi-final. We wanted it so badly and we had our dreams and when your dreams are shattered, you can't put too positive a spin on it."

SOUNDBITE: (English), Steven Gerrard:

"Yeah, I think performance-wise I am reasonably satisfied with the level that I played at. But it still doesn't' crack over the pain and the hurt that I'm feeling the same, as I have done in previous tournaments. At the moment, I am just in a zone of frustration and disappointment because we came so close to ending that quarter-final hoodoo."
