The first quarter-final of Euro 2012 took place on Thursday night, when Portugal faced the Czech Republic.

Hundreds of Portuguese fans crammed in to the bullring in Lisbon to watch the drama unfold on big screens.

Portugal dominated the contest - their fifth consecutive European Championship quarter-final and all eyes were on talismanic leader Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Real Madrid man looked sharp following his brace against the Netherlands, and came close to breaking the deadlock, hitting the woodwork twice.

The Portuguese fans had to wait until the 79th minute before they eventually saw their side take the lead - predictably enough, through Ronaldo.

It finished 1-0, and the fans in Lisbon have faith in their team.

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Joao Paulo, fan: "We have to win every match. We will win the next one and then we will play the final"

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Leonor : "We will get to the final and win it. We are the best. With our strong will, we really are the best "

Portugal will now face either France or Spain for a place in the final.
