England fans celebrate top spot

Intro:

England moved into the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 on Tuesday (19th June), following a narrow 1-0 win over co-hosts Ukraine in Donetsk.

Wayne Rooney, on his return from suspension, scored the winner early in the second half and it was enough to beat an unfortunate Ukraine side.

England now play Italy in the last eight, while Group D runners-up France will meet reigning champions Spain.

Script:

Ignoring that one extremely enthusiastic Ukranian, it was the England fans who were in the mood to party as their side booked a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012.

Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game on his return for England against the co-hosts, and for the fans it was all a bit romantic.

SOUNDBITE (English), Ian Cornock , England fan:
"It's the best thing I've ever experienced in my life. Loved it. All these boys, we loved them. And the Ukrainians as well, Ukrainians are fantastic, we love them as well."

Following Ukraine's defeat, the tournament lost the second of its co-hosts and predictably the atmosphere outside the stadium was sombre as the fans made the short trip home.

Group D's other game saw Sweden beat France 2-0, meaning England top the group ahead of France - a result that means Roy Hodgson's men avoid a meeting with current European and World champions Spain, and instead face Italy in the last eight.

All the more reason to let the band play on!
