Intro:

Portugal beat the Netherlands 2-1 on Sunday (17th June) to set up a quarter-final meeting with the Czech Republic, and send the Dutch team crashing out of the tournament.

Script:

Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo saw Portugal book their place in the final eight of Euro 2012 while sending the Netherlands crashing out of the tournament.

The Dutch needed to win by two clear goals to stand a chance of progressing, but two goals from Portugal captain Ronaldo- who has struck 60 times for Real Madrid this season knocked them out at the first stage.

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Miguelle, Portuguese fan: "Ronaldo played very well. He opened the book and he started to play the way he has to play. That's why we won.

They will face the Czech Republic in the quarter finals, and fans expressed relief at having avoided a meeting with the Greek team, less than 10 years after Greece defeated Portugal in the final of Euro 2004.

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese)Jorje, Portuguese fan: "I'm happy to go to quarterfinals to play against Czech Republic, not Greece. We afraid of Greece, but we think we can win against Czech and go to semi final.

The Dutch, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a tournament in which they have lost all three of their matches, just two years after finishing as World Cup runners-up.
