How they fared at Euro 2012
BACK HOME ... Steven Gerrard

SCOTT PARKER

GRADE A player who left nothing out on the pitch. Ran himself into the ground every time and portrayed the typical British bulldog spirit.

Trouble is, how effective was he overall and did he actually influence the outcome of a game? No — he was too busy chasing the ball and ran out of puff.

STEVEN GERRARD

SET up three of England’s five goals in the group games with excellent crosses from the right wing and whipped in a couple of free-kicks against Italy that were almost converted, too.

A powerful performer who led by example and made a serious case to stay in the skipper’s role all the way through to Brazil 2014. Of course, there’s a long way to go until then and Stevie will have to settle in at club level under new Kop boss Brendan Rodgers. But the ex-Swans manager could raise Gerro’s game to new heights.

JAMES MILNER

PLAYED largely because Theo Walcott was either injured or couldn’t be trusted to cover Glen Johnson.

But he didn’t trouble any of his opposing full-backs and his contribution will soon be forgotten. The fact is he is a workmanlike, basically uninspiring player who isn’t entirely comfortable on the right wing.

However, he has been rated highly enough to win 30 England caps — and he can always console himelf with Manchester City’s title triumph.

ASHLEY YOUNG

SADLY, his Euro 2012 contribution will be best remembered for that missed penalty against Italy.

He never lived up to the pre-tournament hype and wasted Hodgson’s faith in him. Will need to be at his blistering best for Manchester United if we are to see him start another England game any time soon. That’s bad news for a 26-year-old who should be establishing himself in international football. Still, one man can turn him round. Over to you, Sir Alex...

THEO WALCOTT

CAME up trumps with a belter of a goal against Sweden and also assisted Danny Welbeck’s winner.

Didn’t use his lightning pace to any great effect and overall gave weight to the theory that out-and-out wingers are a luxury on the international stage.

To be fair, he wasn’t helped by seeing so little of the ball. But it’s high time that Theo, now 23, threw off the potential tag and started imposing himself on games.

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN

A PLAYER of immense promise — so let’s hope he continues to progress at Arsenal and then transmits that form on to the international scene.

He did enough against France to prompt disappointment amongst England fans when left out of the Sweden game and will surely come again next season.
