Hoddle: England need a change of shape

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has insisted that if the Three Lions are to find any kind of success, they need to come up with a more modern shape than the 4-4-2 formation.

England looked defensively solid in Euro 2012, but their midfield appeared uncomfortable in possession and the strikers generally fed off scraps as build-up play lacked cutting edge.

Despite these criticisms, Hoddle believes England’s campaign was fairly encouraging, but he is certain a change of strategy is needed on Roy Hodgson’s part, with World Cup qualifiers just around the corner.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Hoddle said: "We've got to change our shape when we're in possession.

"When I was manager I used wing-backs and tried to change the shape of the team from 4-4-2 because I learnt from my own experiences as a player.

"Roy will sort out which way and which system he wants to play but we need to give ourselves a better opportunity to attack.

"Looking forward to the World Cup qualifiers, we've got to keep the ball a bit better but there were lots of positives [from Euro 2012].

"I think we've got to come up with a better system but I'm sure that will be worked over in the coming months."
