Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker in central midfield, Ashley Young and James Milner on the flanks, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck in attack. Carroll stood to one side of the goal, watching intently but no doubt a little disappointed.

The ball was worked, time after time, through Rooney, with Hodgson clearly keen to do everything he can to get his principal forward up to speed. He had looked a little ring-rusty in Donetsk and he certainly needs to be sharper at the Olympic Stadium tomorrow night.
