Roo’s Italian job
READY TO ROOL ... Wayne is eyeing semi-final spot

WAYNE ROONEY is convinced England can carry off their own Italian Job on Sunday.

The Manchester United striker is on a high after scoring the winner against Ukraine.

Now he wants to steer England to the Euro 2012 semis and then final glory.

He said: “It’s important that we believe in ourselves. We’ve a great group of players and we’re confident. It’s not going to be an easy game but we’ve the players, we’ve the belief and we’ve the togetherness to do a job on them.

“Once you get to this stage of the competition, anything can happen.”

Rooney, who missed the first two games of the tournament through suspension, cannot wait for Sunday’s last eight clash in Kiev.

He said: “We’re more organised than ever. The lads have all been fighting for each other. We want to do this together, so I think we’ve a great chance.

“We feel good, we’ve prepared well and we’re looking forward to it.

“It was always going to be a difficult group, so to finish top gives us a lot of confidence. France are a great side, to play Ukraine out here was always going to be difficult and we hadn’t beaten Sweden that often.”

Reflecting on Tuesday’s win in Donetsk, Rooney added: “It was a great result and I’m delighted to be back playing.

“I could have played a bit better but I hope that game will help me in the next one on Sunday and then Sunday’s match will help me get better still and, hopefully, win it.

“I felt we needed to try and get on the ball just a little bit more and make them do more running. If we had done that I’m sure the gaps would have come a lot easier for us.

“It was always going to be frantic and we did well to come through.

“Maybe a few years ago I would have run round trying to do everything in the first 20 minutes. But you have to try and feel your way into the game.

“I tried to do that and as the game went on I felt stronger. That will help us for Sunday.”
