Call me Theonaldo
THEO GRAND ... Walcott was England's hero in Kiev

THEO WALCOTT reckons he has got a touch of Cristiano Ronaldo and Danny Welbeck has a hint of Dennis Bergkamp.

Surely extra reason for confidence then going into Tuesday night’s Group D Euro decider in Donetsk against hosts Ukraine.

Walcott is certainly bubbling after his stunning 25-yard strike and brilliant assist in a supersub display against Sweden in Kiev.

He could not keep the smile off his face as he beamed about his starring role in the dramatic 3-2 win and his Ronaldo-style goal.

Walcott grinned: “I’ve never had a strike from distance like that so I surprised myself.

“I didn’t know I had the Ronaldo dip in me to be honest.

“I was really shocked. I even thought it took a deflection at first but I have watched it back now and it didn’t. It was only my third touch and it just shows you must have the confidence to shoot from distance.

“That was my job — to be on the edge of the box, to sort of scout that area and luckily it came out to me and I had a swing at it.”

Walcott, 23, is full of confidence after believing he produced some of the best form of his career during the past season with Arsenal.

Despite making his England debut six years ago, Friday’s game was Walcott’s first at a major finals.

He said: “It was important that I had no injuries last season which was one of the best I had for Arsenal considering the amount of games I had.

“I had a little hamstring injury at the start of this tournament but that is fine.

“To make my first tournament performance in a high-profile match means so much to me.

“It has been a long time coming and hopefully there will be more to come from me. It certainly whets your appetite.

“It seems only the other day, rather than six years ago, that I was picked to go to the World Cup as a 17-year-old.

“Now to finally play in a major finals is a special moment and one to saviour and remember, not only for me but for my family watching back home. I hope I can build on it.

“You’ve got to be ready to come off the bench like that because it is not always about the team that starts a game.

“During the tournament, 23 good players are going to get you far in the competition and I’ve waited for my moment to come.

“There will be other players that will be doing the same thing that I’m doing hopefully, waiting for their chance and you need to make sure you are ready.

“You hopefully come off the bench and show the boss what you can do.

“He said to me during the week that this week is going to be crucial for you, that coming off the bench I could make a difference.

“I did that but the most important thing was to get the three points.

“It doesn’t matter who scores or plays well, three points in tournament situations is what gets you far.

“I actually think we were unfortunate to be 2-1 down but Sweden played well in patches and they just caught us by surprise, maybe woke us up a little bit. I was just about to come on at 1-1 and they scored again before I got on. But I still came on and I think my goal took them by surprise.

“That’s why I didn’t want to go off celebrating and wasting time when we needed the win.

“I wanted to get straight back at them. It shocked them and we knew then we had them.”

Walcott was right and his 78th-minute cross saw Manchester United striker Welbeck score a wonderful backheeled goal to earn England victory.

A goal the Arsenal man thought was reminiscent of Gunners’ legend Bergkamp.

Walcott added: “Danny made his goal look so easy. It was a great finish. It reminded me of Dennis Bergkamp.

“And at such a young age, 21, seven caps now, it shows he can do it at this level.

“But not just Dan, because Andy Carroll’s goal was fantastic too.

“There’s a lot of firepower in this England squad and a lot of competition. And of course Wayne hasn’t been released yet!”

Rooney will get his chance against Ukraine after completing his two-match suspension.

England need only a point to clinch a place in the quarter-finals.

But Walcott is urging the Three Lions to go all out for another morale-boosting win in a bid to pinch top spot in the group from France.

He declared: “We can’t go into games looking for draws. It’s against the hosts and it will be difficult. They are going to have all the support behind them as well.

“They’ve got nothing to lose, they need to win to go through themselves.

“We need to make sure we are strong. We had a great defensive game against France.

“The attacking play was great against Sweden so hopefully it will all come together and we can have a perfect performance.”

One that even Ronaldo and Bergkamp will applaud.
