HEAD BOY ... Andy Carroll looks like being England's target man at Euro 2012
ENGLAND’S Euro 2012 glory charge will rest on the shoulders of Andy Carroll.
The Liverpool striker was an outsider for his country just a few months ago.
But Carroll, 23, has bulldozed his way into new boss Roy Hodgson’s squad with a scorching late-season burst of form.
Now, with Wayne Rooney banned and Danny Welbeck crocked, Carroll looks like being England’s main man in Poland and Ukraine next month.
Carroll was hugely impressive in training yesterday.
His finishing was good and he was strong in the air, almost sending Joleon Lescott flying into the post at one point.
He has won just three England caps to date, scoring once, but Hodgson is set to test him out in the friendly against Norway in Oslo tomorrow night.
Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe is in Hodgson’s squad but the new coach is leaning towards Carroll, with Welbeck a major injury concern.
The Manchester United striker has not played since being crocked by Nigel de Jong almost four weeks ago.
He was seen walking gingerly round the pitch at the Etihad yesterday before disappearing down the tunnel.
Welbeck is now a major concern for Hodgson’s 23-man squad — along with Kop defender Glen Johnson and Spurs midfielder Scott Parker.
Johnson has an infected toe which forced him out of training yesterday.
Parker has had an injection for an Achilles injury and, although he took part in yesterday’s session, he was not flat out and Hodgson is concerned he could suffer a reaction.
The trio have until May 29 — which is when England submit their final squad to UEFA — to prove they are ready to travel.
