Puyol set to miss Euro 2012 as Spain defender is sidelined with knee injury

Spain have been dealt a blow in their bid to retain their title as European champions with the news that Carles Puyol is poised to miss this summer's tournament.

Puyol requires knee surgery and will be out for six weeks after experiencing discomfort following Barcelona's 4-0 defeat of Espanyol on Saturday.

'After tests were conducted it was decided the player would have arthroscopic surgery next Saturday, May 12,' Barcelona said in a statement.

'The estimated time he will be out of action is around six weeks.'

Puyol is definitely out of Barca's final Primera Division game at Real Betis at the weekend and will also miss coach Pep Guardiola's last game in charge - the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao on May 25.
