Cagey Capello playing for time as he ponders Terry's future
Waiting game: Fabio Capello will leave it until the last possible moment before deciding if he will pick John Terry or not

The key question is what Capello does should the police investigation still be going on come Sunday night. It is one Capello is agonising over and one on which he will certainly be seeking guidance from senior officials at the FA, not least chairman David Bernstein.

If the FA allow Terry to remain part of the squad — and the feeling last night was that it was a 50-50 call — it will be uncomfortable given the scrutiny the England captain is under.

The issue polarises opinion. While Chelsea were quick to condemn supporters responsible for disgraceful anti-Ferdinand chants during their Champions League clash against Genk on Tuesday night, the FA will be wary of the fact that England  fans might turn against Terry at Wembley.

There is even a possibility that members of the England camp may feel some hostility towards the 30-year-old skipper. Rio
Ferdinand  is expected to be included in  the provisional squad, even if he might yet struggle to make the final cut because of his problems with form and fitness.
