No racism woes for England fans

Intro:

A high-profile television documentary - hysteria whipped up in the newspapers - hard-hitting comment from a veteran black footballer.

But so far - thankfully - English fears of a racist hell in Ukraine have failed to materialise.

Script:

Before the start of Euro 2012 there were huge worries in England about the threat of racist abuse and violence in Ukraine.

But with only a week left until the final in Kiev, these English fans don't seem to have had any bother.

SOUNDBITE (English): Pete Hancock, England fan:
"It's not racist at all, lovely people. We haven't seen any racism, violence or anything. I'd recommend this country to anyone."

SOUNDBITE (English): Matthew Shapcott, England fan:
"We've seen what we've seen. We've seen Donetsk, we've seen Kiev, we've travelled across Ukraine, no problems. Could not be friendlier."

Before the tournament, former England international Sol Campbell warned fans they might end up coming home in a coffin because of racist violence.

Many black and Asian England fans heeded his advice and stayed at home.

SOUNDBITE (English): Chris Kamara, former English footballer:
"I came for the first England game against France, the people treated me really, really well, didn't treat me any different I have to say than anybody else. I went around Kiev, I walked around Kiev fifteen, twenty minutes, nobody made a big deal of it also. Honestly, one of the most friendly places I've been to."

England fans will be hoping to stay in Ukraine a bit longer, if their side manage a win against Italy on Sunday night.
