Don't doubt the passion of Greek fans.

Gathering near the Acropolis in Athens to watch their side take on Germany in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012.

Going mad after their team equalise.

One in the eye for German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

And her hardline stance on austerity measures for Greece.

Well for a while anyway.

Until normal service is resumed.

4-2 the final score.

Jubilation for German tourists who cheer while their hosts sit quietly now and watch the defeat play out on TV.

Fans in crisis hit Greece had hoped for a victory that could boost the country's morale:

"We are proud to be Greek and we always want Greece to be successful to make its people proud. Soccer is a way to give joy to the people and make them proud about their country and keep their spirits high, particularly in these times we're going through."

But sadly not to be. The Germans dominating the country not just econically but also on the football pitch.

"It was important, not just because of the loans, but because it concerned the pride of our nation."

Despite the loss, Greek fans declared themselves happy with the team's performance and spirit.

A German tourist attempts to get philosophical in the country that gave us philosophy:

"It's just sports, so the best team wins. If it's Greece, ok. If it's Germany it's also ok."

Which is easy to say if you're German...even in English.
