In scenes reminiscent of the aftermath of a final rather than a group match, thousands of German football fans gather in Berlin to celebrate their team's 1- 0 win over Portugal at Euro 2012.

They waved German flags, chanted and celebrated at the official "Fan Park" in the centre of Berlin.

Despite the scoreline, reaction was mixed about how well the team did on the pitch.

Germany have an impressive European record and the expectation is for them to once again shine in a tournament they won in 1972, 1980 and 1996 and also made the final on three other occasions.

Twenty-six-year-old Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez, who was the Bundesliga's top scorer last season, scored the only goal of the match, just moments before he was about to be substituted.

"I think Germany did well. We won"

Germany are in arguably the toughest of the four opening phase groups.

Up next are the Netherlands who'll be under enormous pressure to win following their defeat by Denmark on Saturday.

"We work hard, and we deserve to win, and we won. That's the best thing about it"
