Intro:

Expectations are high in Poland just a few days ahead of the first match of Euro 2012, even in cities like Krakow which are only providing base camps for the teams attending.

Despite not hosting any Euro 2012 games, Poland's second largest city Krakow hopes to benefit from providing the base camp for a few high profile teams.

England, the Netherlands and Italy will all stay in the city based on the Vistula River, and it's hoped the European Championships will help in the development of Krakow as a tourist destination.

39-year-old Martin Lewandowski, who was born in Krakow and has been selling fruit and vegetables at the local market for twenty years, wants to share his town with others.

SOUNDBITE (German): Martin Lewandowski, Krakow resident and fruit seller:

"Many people will come along to Krakow, and that is very good...a lot of money (laughs). And many people will see what a beautiful old town Krakow is."

One person hoping for a prosperous few weeks in Krakow is Deputy Mayor, Magdalena Sroka, however she says it all depends on how far the tournament co-hosts progress.

SOUNDBITE (English): Magdalena Sroka, Deputy Mayor of Krakow:

"The success of the Polish team is very important for the mood, of course, for the citizens of Poland and Krakow, for the fun and entertainment, and it's very important for the sale of the products of Euro 2012 and also for the advertisement sale."

It's not all about fifteen minutes of fame and a quick buck though, Sroka is targeting a long-term impression on visitors to boost future tourism.

SOUNDBITE (English): Magdalena Sroka, Deputy Mayor of Krakow:

"For us, it is much more important how the people from abroad will find Krakow and how they will like Krakow."

Poland will open Euro 2012 on Friday against Greece in Group A.
