Portugal must not depend on Ronaldo, says coach

Intro:

Portugal head into this summer's European Championship in Poland and Ukraine knowing they will have to be at their best just to qualify for the quarter-finals, after they were pitted against the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark in Group B.

Script:

Despite reaching the semi-finals of European Championships on three occasions, Portugal have yet to be crowned champions of Europe.

It is a situation that Cristiano Ronaldo and his team-mates will be looking to remedy in Poland and Ukraine this summer.

However, advancing from Group B will be tough - Portugal face three former champions in the shape of Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Paulo Bento is hoping a three-week build-up to the competition will help his side forge an 'identity', but the Portugal coach is wary of relying too much on star player Ronaldo.

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Paulo Bento, Portugal coach (Asked how much the side will rely on Cristiano Ronaldo at the Euros):

"For us, Ronaldo is a very important player, as he is important for (Real) Madrid, and as he was for Manchester (United). What we want is that our team does not depend on one player. For us, Ronaldo has to help solve some problems, but he cannot be the solution to all problems. We don't want that. We want him to enjoy playing with his team-mates, and then we can arrive at our target of playing like a team."

Portugal reached the finals of Euro 2004, but they were denied the title on home soil as Greece's defensive approach paid dividends and earned a 1-0 victory.

Their previous campaign in a major tournament saw them go out in the last 16 at the 2010 World Cup to eventual winners Spain.
