Hodgson's squad is already missing several senior players but Hart's withdrawal clears the way for Jack Butland or John Ruddy - or possibly both - to win their first international caps.

He does not plan to call up another goalkeeper for the game in Berne, Switzerland, on Wednesday.

Norwich keeper Ruddy was selected in the original squad for Euro 2012 before he broke a finger in training and was replaced by Birmingham youngster Butland.

For Ruddy, it would be a fitting end to a summer that started with him being forced to pull out of the tournament after breaking a finger on his first day of training.
